 Bvlgari revenues annual 2008 drop 2 percent, sales revenues surge 9 percent in the Middle East

The Italian Bvlgari Group revenues in 2008 fell 1.5 percent to USD $ 1.4 billion and net profits fell 45 percent to USD $ 106 million. Revenues by category included a 2.5 % decline for jewellery at USD $ 573 million and watch sales overall fell 10.6 % to USD $ 338 million. While sales fell 12.5 % in the USA and 1.3 % in Europe, they rose 9.1 % in the Middle East and 1.6 %across Asia.

 Investcorp-led consortium acquires L’azurde for USD $ 200 million

A consortium led by Bahrain-based Investcorp including National Commercial Bank of Saudi Arabia and an Abu Dhabi-based investment banking firm has paid more than USD $ 200 million to acquire a 70 % stake in Saudi jewellery firm L’azurde. The founder of 30+ year-old L’azurde, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Othaim, will retain a 30 % stake in the firm and will continue as CEO & Chairman of the company. The company had 2008 revenues of more than USD $ 500 million through its 18 flagship retail stores across the region.

 WGC confirms 17 percent increase in gold sales value in the UAE

The World Gold Council (WGC) confirmed that the market remained healthy in the UAE in relation to global markets. WGC’s latest reports announced that the UAE gold jewellery sales increased by 17 % in 2008 to cross USD $ 3.75 billion compared to USD $ 3.12 billion. Jewellery sales accounted for 90 % of total consumer demand and net retail investment witnessed strong growth of 38 % in Q4-2008, compared to the same period in 2007.

 Pearl carpet worth USD $ 20 million on display, auction in Doha, Qatar

The Pearl Carpet of Baroda is traditionally believed to be ordered by the Indian Maharaja (King) Kande Rao Gaekwad of the princely state of Baroda in India’s Western Gujarat State, to be offered as a gift for the tomb of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in the Saudi city of Madinah. However, due to his death, the gift was never delivered and instead kept as a state treasure.

The carpet is made of an estimated two million Arabian Gulf ‘Basrah’ seed pearls sewn together to form the bed of the carpet with hundreds of glass beads, diamonds set in gold clasps, rubies, sapphires and pearls. The carpet, recently auctioned at Sotheby’s Doha and which was expected to fetch as much as USD $ 20 million, eventually fetched USD $ 5.4 million.

 Sotheby’s to present its third annual noble jewels sale in Geneva in May 2009

Leading Auction House Sotheby’s will hold an auction of some of the finest jewels of noble provenance including jewellery from the Duchess of Windsor to Tsarina Catherine II of Russia in Geneva on 12 May 2009. Among the jewels on offer are a necklace with aquamarines and diamonds made by Cartier in 1912, a pair of diamond bracelets that once belonged to Queen Theresa of Bavaria, a historic parure (set of jewels & ornaments) that was once the property of Queen Marie Amelie of France and a tiara of Eugenie, Empress of France.

 Antiquorum to hold First Spring 2009 Auction of fine & rare watches in Geneva

Antiquorum will hold an auction of important collectors wristwatches, pocket watches & clocks on 28 and 29 March in Geneva during Baselworld 2009. Highlights of this spring auction include two very rare Patek Philippe watches that represent milestones in the history of the brand.

 Tibaldi teams up with the Swiss Red Cross for fund-raising activities

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Red Cross, Italian premium pen brand Tibaldi is launching a new limited edition of luxury writing instruments. The exclusive collection will be presented for the first time at the Swiss Red Cross Ball to be held in Geneva on 6 June 2009.

These hand-painted, hand-etched pens will be available as a limited edition of 150 fountain pens and 150 roller balls. There will also be an edition of 15 pens in each design in solid 18-carat gold. The proceeds of an exclusive auction will be directed to the Red Cross.

 Danish designer’s watch helps the world’s refugees

Danish watch brand Obaku harmony has presented a new designer watch, which aids the relief organization, Refugees United, by donating 20 US Dollars, for every watch sold. The watch has a Kevlar strap, titan glass and a new environmentally friendly movement which does not contain mercury and lead in its batteries. The watch will be presented to the international audience at Baselworld 2009.

 IGI to offer Laboratory Services at Baselworld 2009

Antwerp, Belgium-based International Gemmological Institute (IGI) has announced that it ill have a fully equipped working laboratory at Baselworld 2009, marking the first time attendees of the industry show have access to on-site IGI services. “By offering full IGI laboratory services at Baselworld 2009 our intent is to support more efficient and successful trades for exhibitors and buyers,” commented IGI CEO Roland Lorie.

This elegant, classical 41 mm watch with a see-through case back is engraved with the beautiful ‘Cotes de Geneve’ decoration. Swiss watch brand Volna has mastered the use of titanium in making titanium G5 metal. The newly released Typhoon Siberia SHCI (Security Hand Chronograph Indicator) is a chronograph whose case, bezel, crown and push-pieces are executed in titanium grade 5 in two series each limited to 125 pieces. This 46.5 mm case watch is water resistant to 300 metres.

 Van Cleef & Arpels holds first exhibition in the Middle East

For the first time in its 103-year history, French jewellery brand, the House of Van Cleef & Arpels held a three-day exhibition entitled ‘The Art of Magical Jewel’ of nearly 160 of its finest jewellery creations at the Madinat Jumeirah Convention Centre in Dubai, UAE from 19 to 21 March 2009. Among the pieces on display were the 1974 Collier Panka featuring 132 blue turquoise stones and 36 carats of diamonds set in 18-carat gold with matching earrings and an Art Deco brooch from the Flot de Rubans collection featuring a mix of baguette & brilliant diamonds set in white gold and platinum.

 43rd Bangkok Gems & Jewellery Fair concludes successfully despite economic downturn

The 43rd Edition of the popular and long-running Bangkok Gems & Jewellery Fair held at the sprawling Impact Challenger Hall from 26 February to 1 March 2009, concluded successfully.  CIBJO upgrades primary website, announces venue of 2009 Congress in Istanbul

In the run up to the 2009 CIBJO Congress, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey from 3 to 5 May 2009, CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, has launched an upgraded version of its primary website, www.cibjo.org. In related news, CIBJO has also announced that the venue of the 2009 Congress has been moved to the Sheraton Istanbul Atakoy Hotel. The decision to relocate the congress venue was taken so that a greater number of participants would be able to attend the event.
