Arabian Watches & Jewellery By Nagmani

Sports watches have long been one of the most sought-after favorite watch categories for luxury watch brands to make the most of since the watch buyers are big fans of such meticulous timepieces as well as well-aware of how nicely they fit in on almost all occasions. It’s no wonder they’re largely known for their multi-functional qualities that are seamlessly considered unrivaled in many respects. In addition, their looks are quite bold yet subtle in style. In a way, they’re touted as exceptionally versatile in terms of use. Most importantly, they’ve their own refined taste and value, thus easily giving them a precious edge in the industry. Therefore, they can be best called friends for all our grand and adventuresome moments in life. How so? Let’s find out.

There is no doubt whatsoever about Breitling being a sports watch brand from the very start. Needless to say, the brand already boasts being the first in order to claim a streak of popular records to its name for creating spectacular sports watches from the air to land. For instance, the brand paved the way forward by designing the famous Navitimer for use by the US AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) pilots in the 1950s as part of their long-standing partnership. It was fitted with a slide rule making it easier for pilots to successfully do or measure intricate complications like speed, distance and fuel consumption while flying their aviation machines with absolute preciseness. When Breitling designed this first pilot watch for the members of the AOPA, the winged logo of it was only evident on the 24-hour dial at 12 o’clock as part of the deal. Subsequently, when other pieces of the Navitimer were released, this time they did have the logos of both Breitling and AOPA displayed elegantly on the face of their dials.

And in 2022, it was a celebration time for Breitling as the brand doubled down by revisiting its golden period of making the Navitimer for the AOPA to mark the 70th anniversary of their great partnership. On the eve of this big milestone which really was, Breitling went on to exuberantly launch three new sizes 41 mm, 42 mm and 46 mm of the original Navitimer with two case materials comprising 18-karat red gold and stainless steel. “Our collaboration with the AOPA was a gamechanger as it gave rise to the Navitimer, an iconic wristwatch in the making for the world of horology to always remember it,” said Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “It was something we had hardly envisioned for.”

Likewise, when it comes to creating and working on the specific requirements for sea and land watches, Breitling has a plethora of amazing options (starting with the multipurpose Chronomat BO1 42 and the stylish Chronomat 28) available for watch enthusiasts to immerse themselves in. Fast forward to 2026, we’ve got the eternal Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 and Navitimer 32 (available in steel and red gold) embedded with contemporary precision to the delight of both modern-day aviators and watch lovers followed by the sea watches from its Superocean Heritage collection that are more innovative in style thanks to the scratch-resistant ceramic bezels and sleek bracelets. As Eric Wind, a seasoned vintage watch expert pointed out, “Wristwatches for men were originally tools, whether to assist with timekeeping during the trench warfare of World War I or the early days of aviation. As technology advanced, watches became essential tools for diving and space exploration. This purity of purpose for tool watches remains popular to this day for various brands looking to offer something highly unique.”

The conversation on sports watches will be totally incomplete without the mention of Rolex since its reputation in the domain of designing ultimate tool timepieces is always referred to as an unmatched one. Asked which luxury watch brands always hold their place, Wind said, “Undoubtedly, for me the quintessential sports watch is the Rolex Submariner. It’s perhaps the most well-known watch in the world and what people aspire to own one day. That image may have been cemented by Sean Connery wearing a "Big Crown" Submariner reference 6538 as James Bond in the movie called Dr. No. The best part is that the Submariner has ceaselessly been evolving since its launch in 1953.”

While Rolex is for sure at the top of the heap in terms of manufacturing magnificent sports watches for air, land, and sea actions, it’s good to see that even Patek Philippe has made a great pivot into the world of sports watches in recent decades with the birth of the Nautilus in circa 1976 and the Aquanaut in the 1990s. More recently, Richard Mille has helped define the category of building extremely expensive sports watches in its own red herring ways.

“But there is also this undeniable truth circling in the air that the watches from the "Holy Trinity" are deemed as slightly more delicate and less robust than watches from other brands. That’s well reflected in less water resistance rating, for instance,” Wind said. “Yet they’re aesthetically designed to deliver high-performance, especially Audemars Piguet sports watches (Royal Oak Offshore Self-winding Chronograph, Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT and Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Date Large pieces made of high-quality materials with bold color tones) that are pricey since they truly meet the standards of haute horlogerie. Hence, the Royal Oak Offshore Diver stands out for being a decent dive watch.”

Tudor, which is the little sibling of Rolex, also had its own Submariners. Together they make some of the finest sports watches that one can’t miss or afford to put aside. “Tudor more recently renamed the traditional Submariner line as the Black Bay 58 vintage-inspired line and the Pelagos titanium line that are focal examples of absolute precision, robust reliability and pure adventure all performing in sync to their highest level under extreme conditions,” Wind said.

Another luxury watch brand that has successfully made its mark in the world of bold and avant-garde watches is none other than Roger Dubuis. It prefers to walk its own way. And it’s no different with its sports watches too as they tend to exemplify the patterns of hyper horology pioneered by the brand itself. All timepieces of the entire Excalibur Spider collection mirror the heart & soul of supercars. At the end of the day, it’s all about enjoying the ride in a supercar with a super watch tailored for such racing adventures. As Wind outlined, “Motorsport and Roger Dubuis are made for each other surpassing all the boundaries in countering the conservative pigeonholes in watchmaking.”

In the same spirit, IWC Schaffhausen has been at the forefront of designing sports watches. And when it’s about racing and finishing the laps with a 100% success rate, the brand has done a brilliant job. It was in 2013 that the watch brand became the official engineering partner of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team delivering superb racing timepieces for it in the form of special editions and official watches that have become the cornerstone of the team drivers’ lives while showing their skills on the racing circuit. The most famous of it all is IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 with its highly legible dial and other design details all shining in the PETRONAS-green color which represents as well as powers the team’s symbolic identity. Besides, the brand enjoys a powerful influential bond with the US Navy and Marine Corps aviation units since it’s the one and only watch brand entitled to designing technically advanced watches for them. And the Blue Angels® flight squadron is one such unit for which IWC did make a strikingly blue bespoke watch in 2021 to celebrate its 75th anniversary with the regiment’s crest engraved on the blue ceramic dial at 6 o’clock precisely. Another exhilarating part involves an unforgettable collaboration of IWC with the 7-time British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. Together they’ve worked on the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition honoring his legacy as a race champion of great caliber (available in three colors burgundy, black and gold) and the Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph cased in platinum with a teal dial.

On the same page, we’ve another coveted sports watch brand called Panerai that’s mostly known for its maritime heritage. Divided into four groups Luminor, Submersible, Luminor Due and Radiomir, the brand has simply been catering to the demands of professional divers and watch fans in general with greater success. The first two categories are highly popular among scientists who are sea divers going deep beneath the surface of the ocean to explore the species. Panerai watches stand out for their proven record in the field of warfare scenarios. These cushion-shaped timepieces are a fitting tribute in recognition to the valiant commandos of the Italian Navy while they were often stationed in different territories during World War II to dive into extreme waters as part of their mission to defeat the highly skilled enemies secretly marching ahead to capture their country through brutal stratagems.

“If we talk about IWC and Panerai, then both brands are quintessential "sports watches" companies. Panerai, in particular, only makes sports watches. IWC does have tremendous expertise in making both sport and dress watches, but is mainly known for its sports watches like the Big Pilot and “Mark” series including the Top Gun watches,” Eric said.

To put it mildly, there is a vast scope for sports watches to control the index of the watchmaking industry with their mind-blowing designs and technical innovations. And it’s no less than a big blessing for a sudden exciting flurry of new brands if they’re thinking about entering this lucrative segment. After all, it’s a learning curve because great things in life take time to surface up in the most exquisite way and therefore, they shouldn’t be diluted with or ever seen through the narrow creek of short-term goals.
